Voice of America: US: Airstrikes in Somalia Kill 4 al-Shabab Extremists

JOHANNESBURG —  The United States military says it has carried out two airstrikes in Somalia that killed four al-Shabab extremists. The U.S. Africa Command statement on Tuesday says Monday's airstrikes were in the vicinity of Baqdaad after the military's Somali partners "were engaged by al-Shabab militants." It does not say whether any of the partners were killed.

Turkish rescue teams say they have recovered the bodies of three Ukrainians who were killed when a cargo ship sank off Turkey's Black Sea coast. Ukraine's ambassador to Turkey, Andriy Sybiha, wrote on Twitter on January 8 that the bodies of two Ukrainian citizens would be identified in the presence of an envoy from the Ukrainian Consulate in Turkey.

LIBREVILLE, GABON —  Gabon officials are inspecting the country's state radio station where security officers thwarted a coup attempt by army soldiers on Monday. Students in the capital, Libreville, returned to schools Tuesday, markets opened, the radio was back on air and phone lines were restored as President Ali Bongo Ondimba's government retained control.
